Natalie Powell
Natalie Powell is the Director of Powell Family Law, a Brisbane and Gold Coast-based practice focused on complex family law, domestic and family violence, and child protection matters.
Natalie is known for her calm, strategic approach to cases that are often emotionally charged, legally complex, and high-risk. Her work is grounded in careful analysis, trauma-informed practice, and a strong commitment to fairness, safety, and dignity within the legal process.
A Practice Built on Experience and Judgment
Natalie has worked extensively in family law, with particular experience in matters involving:
- Domestic and family violence
- Coercive control and systems abuse
- High-conflict parenting disputes
- Complex property settlements
- Child protection proceedings
She is frequently engaged in matters where there are power imbalances, safety concerns, or overlapping legal systems. Natalie’s approach is measured and deliberate, focused on understanding the full context of a client’s situation and providing clear, realistic advice about the available pathways forward.
Clients value her ability to explain complex legal issues in plain language, to provide detailed written advice, and to guide them through difficult decisions without inflaming conflict or creating unnecessary risk.
Recognised Advocacy and Leadership
Natalie’s work in domestic and family violence matters has been recognised within the legal profession. She was named a finalist for the Dame Quentin Bryce Domestic Violence Prevention Advocate Award, acknowledging her contribution to advocacy and reform in this space.
She is also the recipient of the Dancing CEOs Legacy Award, recognising sustained leadership, community engagement, and support for organisations working with victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.
These recognitions reflect the substance of Natalie’s work rather than a single case or outcome — a long-standing commitment to careful, ethical, and safety-focused legal practice.
Policy Advocacy and Law Reform
In addition to her legal practice, Natalie is actively involved in policy advocacy and law reform relating to family law, domestic and family violence, and child protection.
Her advocacy is informed by frontline legal experience and engagement with community organisations and professional bodies. Natalie contributes to reform conversations with a practical lens — focused on how laws operate in real people’s lives and how systems can better respond to vulnerability, risk, and complexity.
How Natalie Works With Clients
Natalie’s practice is characterised by:
- Clear and comprehensive written advice
- Strategic decision-making grounded in evidence
- A trauma-informed, non-judgmental approach
- Strong preparation for negotiation or court
- A focus on durable, realistic outcomes
She works closely with experienced barristers, experts, and support services where appropriate, and is known for being thorough, steady, and prepared — particularly in matters that others may avoid due to complexity or emotional weight.
Perspective Beyond the Law
Outside of legal practice, Natalie has a longstanding interest in boxing, which has strongly informed her professional approach. Boxing reinforces discipline, preparation, and risk assessment — and the principle that you should never engage in a fight unless you understand the risks, are prepared for the consequences, and are choosing to engage on your own terms.
Just as importantly, it teaches restraint. You do not allow someone else to dictate how you respond. You remain controlled, deliberate, and focused on your objective.
This perspective carries directly into Natalie’s legal practice. She does not escalate matters unnecessarily or encourage clients into battles they do not want or cannot safely sustain. Instead, she supports clients to make informed, strategic decisions — choosing when to negotiate, when to hold firm, and when litigation is truly necessary — always aligned with their goals, capacity, and tolerance for risk.
Rhiannon
Powell Family Law is a deliberately small practice. We are supported by Rhiannon, who works closely across the practice.
Because we regularly act in high-risk domestic and family violence matters, we limit the amount of publicly available information about team members. This is a conscious, safety-focused decision.
Rhiannon may not be working at all times; however, she is highly responsive and will always ensure clients are followed up and responded to promptly. She is known within the practice for her attention to detail, calm presence, and steady support through complex and emotionally demanding processes.
Unofficially — and everyone at the firm knows this — Rhiannon is actually the boss. She appreciates good coffee, good company, and a good laugh, which helps balance the seriousness of the work we do.
